Please note that until further notice, only one (1) visitor is allowed in the Emergency Department with a patient, and visitors with patients who have symptoms of respiratory illness must wait outside the building. This is for the safety of our patients and staff.
Our Emergency Department (ED) offers around-the-clock care, with 11 patient care units and a triage suite. Our expert team of physicians and nurses has been recognized for both patient satisfaction—90th percentile or higher nationally—and quality outcomes.
For patients who are seriously injured, Dosher's ED staff works in partnership with the regional trauma center at New Hanover Regional Medical Center to facilitate transfer and treatment when appropriate.
All full-time registered nurses are BLS, ACLS, and PALS certified.
Dosher's ED staff participates in RACE-STEMI protocols.
The ED staff is well versed on disaster procedures and protocol. The hospital is an ongoing participant in multiple area-wide disaster preparedness drills annually.
Dosher's Emergency Department offers specialized services for victims of sexual assault. A Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) is an RN with specialized training in the care and treatment of survivors of sexual assault. The SANE nurses at Dosher are responsible for preserving the dignity of the patient and for collecting forensic evidence. They also may be called to testify as an expert witness in court cases.
The Emergency Department at Dosher was the recipient of the Southeastern Regional Advisory Committee Trauma Services Award in 2015 and several times in prior years.

For minor injuries and illnesses, please consider using our Convenient Care at the Dosher Wellness Center, 3009 Medical Plaza Lane, Southport. Convenient Care is open M - F, 8:00 am - 6:30pm. Same day appointments are available, however, due to current safety precautions, we ask that patients call ahead. Contact the Convenient Care staff at 910-454-4732.

COVID-19
Dosher Memorial Hospital takes every measure possible to treat all patients who need emergency care in a safe and timely manner. Due to the recent uptick in COVID cases locally and the corresponding increase in need for COVID testing, it is important to remind the community that our Emergency Department prioritizes acuity over arrival time, and that patients with non-critical symptoms may wait longer for treatment. The Dosher Emergency Department does not perform COVID testing for travel.
