Lymphedema Therapy
How do I know if it's Lymphedema?
Lymphedema is a chronic condition which is often under recognized, undiagnosed, or undertreated.
The notable symptom is swelling that won't go away which is due to fluid retention that occurs when the lymphatic system is faulty or damaged.
Swelling may occur anywhere, including head, neck throat, arms or legs and may be accompanied by pain, tightness, limited motion, and sometimes infection.
Causes of lymphedema include:
Removal of lymph nodes
Injury to lymphatic vessels due to trauma or infection
Venous insufficiency, causing overload of lymphatic vessels
Radiation treatment for certain forms of cancer.
(2 out of 5 breast cancer patients will develop lymphedema within 5 years of surgery.)
There is no cure for Lymphedema and can have a negative impact on quality of life, and may leave patients with increased risk of disability and infection.
The good news:
Lymphedema can be effectively treated with complete decongestive therapy.
